Field Study 6 (Teaching Philosophy)
August 27, 2018
Teachers have different teaching philosophy that really affects how they deal with their students, how they see learning, and their beliefs about teaching. There are seven Philosophies of Education
(1) Essentialism (2) Progressivism (3) Perennialism (4) Existentialism (5) Behaviorism
(6) Linguistic Philosophy (7) Constructivism.
These are the philosophies that teachers practice in the teaching field. Some teachers give emphasis on subject matter, some responds to their student's needs, some believes that human beings possess the same essential nature, some use variety of teaching strategies, some believes that classroom environment control the desired responses from the learners, some uses experiential method in teaching, and some emphasizes hands-on problem solving. Indeed, teachers are different.
Based on my interview and observation in my cooperating teacher, I found out what is his teaching philosophy. Mr. Quinlog said that he wants his learners to acquire basic knowledge, skills, and values. He is handling students with Intellectual Disability, Autism, and Physical Impairment. They are graded and non-graded. He gives emphasis on the subject matter. He rely on a prescribed textbooks and he uses drill and lecture method. Based on his answers, I can say that Mr. Quinlog is an Essentialist. As I observe him, I can see the manifestation of his teaching philosophy. He usually discuss the lesson and give short exercise to his students. He believes that the basic skills or knowledge needs to be transmitted to students in a systematic and disciplined way.
Great job Ms. Taguines you really observed your cooperation teacher because you are able to find out his philosophy :)
